Members of the Thundering Herd squad huddle up to talk strategy at halftime. Marshall came out on fire after the half.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University women’s soccer team (4-3-1, 1-1-1) triumphed over the Purple Aces of the University of Evansville, 3-1 in a physical battle Sunday at Sam Hood Field.

“It showed a lot of heart for us to come back and score three goals,” Marshall midfielder Ellerie Karl said. “This is just another step for us as we are coming together as a team.”

The Herd found themselves down early as Evansville’s Ashley Sandefur scored only four minutes into the match to put the Purple Aces (1-9-1) up 1-0. Marshall wasn’t discouraged however, as they came back with an answer only five minutes later as Ashley Schillig (New Albany, OH) headed the ball into the back of the net off a nicely placed ball from Jorie Grundstrom (Maplewood, MN).

Marshall looked like a team on a mission in the second half as they came out strong, dominating play in almost every category, including outshooting Evansville 16-2. This time it was sophomore Ellerie Karl (Oakwood, OH) heading the ball past the Evansville defense off a perfectly placed corner kick by Lindsey Jayjack (Dublin, OH). Less than five minutes later the Herd extended its lead as Schillig struck for her second goal of the match and her seventh of the season. Karl and Danielle Lowther (Grand Haven, MI) combined for the assist.

Marshall improved its overall record to 4-3-1 as Head Coach Teresa Patterson and her squad wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule. The Herd will hit the road next weekend to face off against Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green State University on Friday and the University of Toledo on Sunday.
