Women's Soccer Falls to Miami
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Marshall University women?s soccer team was defeated 3-0 by Miami University (Ohio) today on a soggy Sam Hood Field. The match featured the number three team in the Mid-American Conference, Miami, versus the Thundering Herd who were on a roll after defeating Buffalo, the number one team in the MAC, on Friday.
Marshall (6-6-1, 3-3-1) outshot Miami (8-5-0, 5-2-0) 16-11. The Herd had several good scoring opportunities, including a penalty kick, but could not find the back of the net. Marshall also held the advantage in corner kicks 7-3.
The Red Hawks first score came with less than five minutes to go in the first half. A controversial play in the box led to a penalty kick for Miami?s Andrea Cunningham who came through with the score. The next score did not come until the 75th minute when there was a scramble in front of the net off a Miami corner kick. Cunningham then scored her second goal of the match in the 78th minute to put the Red Hawks up 3-0.
Prior to today?s match, Marshall had not allowed more than two goals in a single match. Marshall goalkeeper Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, NY) had 3 saves in the match.
Marshall continues its homestand next weekend with conference match-ups against Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo. The Bowling Green contest will begin Friday, Oct. 19, at 7:00 p.m.
