Shane Winkler enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Marshall Thundering Herd softball team. His main responsibilities focus on hitting and the outfield, while assisting with the infielders, catchers, recruiting and administrative duties within the program.
Winkler made an immediate impact on the program in his first season, as the Herd combined to hit .285 with 46 home runs.
PRIOR TO MARSHALL
Prior to joining the Marshall coaching staff, Winkler was the co-head softball coach at Danville Area Community College in Danville, Ill., where he was the hitting coach and worked with the defense. He also made the schedules and managed practices, while also assisting in recruiting, fundraising and academics.
He helped lead DCAC to its top finish in conference and regional play in over a decade, guiding the program to its first winning season in 12 years.
Winkler has also volunteered as hitting coach for the highly successful South Newton Summer Softball Programs since 2000, as well as working with South Newton High School in Kentland, Ind.
Last season, he played minor league baseball for the Amarillo (Texas) Dillas of the United Baseball League and the Washington (Pa.) Wild Things of the Frontier League. Prior to that, Winkler played for the River City Rascals of the Frontier League in 2003 and the Florence (Ky.) Freedom of the Frontier League in 2004.
Winkler earned his associate's degree in general education from Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Ill., in 2002. He then received his bachelor's of arts degree in communication studies from Butler University in 2004.
