ATLANTA, Ga.-Pinch-hitter Jessica Ferrick drilled a three-run homer to help power an offensive explosion as the Marshall softball team defeated Miami (Ohio) 11-6 Sunday afternoon on the final day of competition at the Georgia Tech Classic.
The Herd is now 3-7 on the season.
Marshall opened up an 11-0 lead in the contest with five runs in the first, one in the second and five in the fourth. The RedHawks plated six in the fifth for the final margin.
Left fielder Kaelynn Greene knocked in the game’s first run and first baseman Alysia Hively knocked in two more with another hit. Shortstop Alexandra Bayne and right fielder Kristina Braxton drove in the last two of the first inning with two more singles.
Third baseman Jazmine Valle doubled in second baseman Bri Anna Hope in the second inning before the Herd posted five more tallies in the fourth.
Valle drove in the first run of that frame with a double down the left field line and Ferrick followed two batters later with a three-run blast to center. Bayne knocked in the last run with a sacrifice fly to right.
Center fielder Ashley Gue went 3-for-4, while Hope, Valle and catcher Katalin Lucas scored twice. Gue has another big day on the basepaths as she registered three stolen bases and Valle added another.
All of the offense was more than enough support for Marshall hurler Andi Williamson (3-6), who allowed five runs on two hits and four walks with nine strikeouts. Halie Vance got the game’s final seven outs, allowing two hits and a walk with a strikeout.
The Herd will be back in action this weekend at the Spartan Classic in Greensboro, N.C. where it will face UNC Greensboro twice, Drexel twice and Quinnipiac once.
