Feb. 18, 2006

Box Score

ATHENS, Ga. - Junior Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore./Santiam Christian) suffered her first loss of the season, allowing two costly runs on three hits, as the Winthrop Eagles downed the Marshall Thundering Herd 2-1 Saturday.

Harter (3-1) struck out just one batter in seven innings of work, while walking a pair of batters. Winthrop's Julie Harvey (1-2) struck out three Herd batters, allowing one run on four hits in five innings. Shahna Ashard earned the save, pitching two innings of near-perfect relief.

Weather permitting, Marshall (5-3) faces the 12th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Herd left six runners on base, while Winthrop (1-4) stranded five.

Lauren Blaser and Sarah Magee drove in both of Winthrop's runs, with Magee's solo home run in the third inning making the difference.

Jessica Williams, Samantha Rodriguez, Leigh Wintter and Ashley Mitchell each recorded a hit for the Thundering Herd.

It took over two innings, but Winthrop cracked the scoreboard first in the third inning. Magee took the first pitch she saw from Harter and sent it over the right field fence, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

After a Samantha Rodriguez (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) error at third and a subsequent walk, things could have unraveled for the Herd. However, Harter settled down and retired the final two batters to get out of the near-disastrous inning.

Marshall had an opportunity to even the score in the bottom of the fourth inning, but was unable to take advantage of a passed ball. With runners at the corner and two out, Harvey's pitch tipped Jenny Scrymgeour's glove and rolled to the backstop. Rodriguez, who was on third, broke for home but was met at the plate by Harvey who tagged her out to end the inning.

Winthrop padded its lead in the fifth on Blaser's RBI sacrifice fly to right, which plated Scrymgeour for a 2-0 Eagles advantage.

The Herd cut Winthrop's lead in half in the bottom half of the fifth, 2-1. With a runner on, Ashley Mitchell (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison) roped a double in the left field gap.

Joscelyn Bitner (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne), who was on second, hesitated in her advance to third and later overran third base. Bitner was caught in a run down and was later thrown out trying to advance to home. The play allowed Mitchell to advance to third.

After Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga./Harrison) drew a two-out walk, sister Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga./Harrison) scored Mitchell with an RBI single through the left side. That would be all the Herd could muster as Ashard relieved Harvey and shut down Marshall in the final two innings.
