Box Score

ATHENS, Ga. - Becky Mohl's RBI triple to right-center field in the eighth inning proved to be the difference as the 12th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs took a thrilling 7-4 extra-inning victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd Saturday night.

Marshall (5-4) starting pitcher Veronica Ralston (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) was dealt the tough loss (2-3), allowing seven runs on eight hits in eight complete innings. Ralston walked six Georgia batters, while striking out two.

Kasi Carroll (4-1) earned the relief victory, striking out four batters in two innings of perfect relief. Georgia (6-2) starter Katie Griffith received the no-decision, allowing four runs on seven hits, while striking out eight in six innings.

Samantha Rodriguez (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Alison Horne knocked in two runs for Georgia.

Persistent rain delayed the start of the Herd's game with Georgia, forcing the game to start at 5:15 p.m. - over three hours later than the regularly 2 p.m. start.

When the game finally began, Ralston held the Bulldogs to just one hit in the first inning, but she couldn't repeat the feat in the second inning. Georgia scored three runs on two hits in the frame, taking a 3-0 advantage.

After Jessica Doucette drew a lead-off walk, Horne cleared the bases with a home run to straight-away center field. The blast gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Victoria Sanders later scored on Jennifer Corbin's RBI ground out to give UGA a three-run lead.

With one out in the Herd's half of the second, another line of thunderstorms forced a 35-minute rain delay. When play resumed at 6:25 p.m., Griffith retired two of the next three Herd batters to keep Marshall scoreless after two complete innings.

Marshall pulled to within one run, 3-2, in the bottom of the third. With one out, Ashley Mitchell (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison) reached on an infield single. Sisters Amanda and Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga./Harrison) also reached on infield singles, loading the bases.

An RBI sacrifice fly by Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif./Diamond Bar) plated Mitchell for the Herd's first run of the night. Amanda Williams then scored on an RBI single to the right-center field gap by Samantha Rodriguez (Oakley, Calif./Freedom), cutting Georgia's lead to 3-2.

Georgia threatened to build upon its lead in the fourth. But, with two runners on and two out, Corbin was caught in a run down and thrown out at third to end the inning.

The Herd evened the score in the bottom half of the fourth at 3-3. With two outs, Deanna Tourville (Rescue, Calif./Ponderosa) drew a walk and later advanced to third on a Mitchell infield single and Corbin's throwing error.

Griffith intentionally walked Amanda Williams to load the bases for Jessica Williams. Facing a 1-2 count, Tourville scored on a passed ball to tie the game. Jessica Williams then struck out to end the inning.

Georgia regained a one-run lead, 4-3, on Megan McAllister's RBI single through the left side in the fifth inning.

The Herd started its rally attempt in the bottom of the seventh. Amanda Williams drew a lead-off walk, followed by Jessica Williams who reached on a throwing error by Corbin. Folden's fielder's choice loaded the bases for Rodriguez.

With no outs, Rodriguez singled through the left side, plating Amanda Williams, to even the score at 4-4. However, the Herd left the bases loaded, sending the game into extra innings.

With the international tie-breaker in effect, Georgia scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 7-4 lead. Becky Mohl's RBI triple to right-center field plated Horne and Godfrey. Mohl later scored on Carroll's sacrifice fly, giving the Bulldogs the three-run advantage.

Marshall will conclude action at the Third Annual Georgia Softball Classic Sunday. The Herd faces Appalachian State at 10 a.m., followed by host Georgia at 2 p.m.
