Box Score

HUNTINGTON - Marshall's home opener began with a two-run home run and ended with a three-run blast. The Thundering Herd scored seven runs in the last two innings to dispose of the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 10-1 Tuesday at Dot Hicks Field.

Marshall (11-8) has now won five of its last six games and its last six home openers. Eastern Kentucky (5-7) dropped its second straight contest.

Senior Herd hurler Amanda Luers (Dover, Ohio/Dover) earned her second consecutive win (4-2) after holding the Colonels to two hits in three innings of work. Luers struck out a team-high four batters. Starting pitcher Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore./Santiam Christian) surrendered the Colonels' only run in the second inning.

Kelsey Anderson (3-4) was dealt the loss for the Colonels, allowing seven runs on seven hits in five innings.

The Marshall junior slugging duo of Samantha Rodriguez (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) and Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif./Diamond Bar) drove in nine of the Herd's 10 runs. Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a career-best two home runs and six RBI. Folden went 1-for-2 with a three-run, walk-off home run for the run-rule victory.

J.J. Bitner (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases. Caitlyn Jackson (Ontario, Calif./Pomona Catholic) added two hits, going 2-for-3.

"We started out slowly, but I was pleased with the way we picked up later in the game," Marshall head coach Shonda Stanton said. "If we continue to swing the bats this weekend like we did today, then we should be successful."

The Herd jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Rodriguez delivered a two-out, two-run home run over the left field fence, giving the home team the two-run lead.

Eastern Kentucky responded in the visiting half of the second inning on Shyenne Hussey's solo home run to right field. However, that would be the Colonels' only run on the afternoon.

Marshall earned the run back in the third inning. With two on and two out, Stanton gave the steal sign to Folden, who was caught in a run-down that allowed Bitner to score. Folden was subsequently out on the play, ending the inning, but not before the Herd scored its third run.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Herd increased its lead to six runs, 7-1, in the fifth. Freshman Marcena Bertoldo (Beaumont, Calif./Rialto) led off with a bloop single that hit the chalk along the right field line. Bitner then reached on a throwing error by Eastern Kentucky catcher Becky Werle.

Christina Guillen (Chino, Calif./Midland College) followed by drawing a walk to load the bases. After Folden lined out, Rodriguez cleared the bases with a towering grand slam to left field - the Herd's first four-bagger of the season. Rodriguez's second home run of the game gave Marshall a commanding six-run lead.

The Herd put the Colonels away in the sixth inning behind Folden. Bertoldo and Bitner each reached base safely to lead off the inning. After Kristina Knecht (Concord, Calif./Daytona Beach CC) successfully advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, Folden launched her sixth home run of the season to end the game early because of run-rule.

Marshall continues its homestand when it welcomes the UTEP Miners this weekend to "The Dot" for a three-game Conference USA series. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. (ET), followed by a single game Sunday at 12 p.m. (ET). CSTV GameTracker will be available as well as a live broadcast by WMUL 88.1 FM via
