Box Score

EL PASO, Texas - Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, UTEP scored six unanswered runs to take a 6-4 win over the Marshall Thundering Herd in game two Saturday evening at Helen of Troy Complex.

The Herd (22-17, 9-5 C-USA) lost its first Conference USA series of the season. Earlier in the day, the Miners (19-23, 5-5 C-USA) turned back a late-inning rally by the Herd, 3-2.

Reigning C-USA Pitcher of the Week Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Ore./Santiam Christian) was dealt her first loss since March 22. Harter (9-8) allowed six runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. Amanda Luers (Dover, Ohio/Dover) pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one hit, while walking two.

UTEP starting pitcher Megan Barber (4-6) earned the win, allowing four runs on six hits with six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. Veronica Flournoy, the winning pitcher in game one, earned her third save of the season in game two.

Megan Whiteaker paced the Miners at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI.

Marshall sophomore Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif./Diamond Bar) was held hitless in the second game, going 0-for-3 with an RBI. Folden finished the day 0-for-6. Ashley Mitchell (Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison) and Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga./Harrison) each recorded two hits for the Herd.

Unlike game one, the Thundering Herd struck first in the opening frame, taking an early 1-0 lead. Folden reached on a two-base fielding error by Andi Zolton.

Following a Samantha Rodriguez (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) walk, Deanna Tourville (Rescue, Calif./Ponderosa) plated Folden with an RBI single to right field to give the Herd a 1-0 lead.

Marshall would take a 4-0 advantage in the second inning. With one out, Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena) struck out swinging but reached base on a wild pitch. Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga./Harrison) and Mitchell followed with back-to-back singles.

Folden then plated Kacenga with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, extending the Herd's lead to 2-0. Williams and Mitchell later scored on a fielding error by UTEP second baseman Sara Hernandez.

Harter's scoreless inning streak came to a close in the bottom of the fourth inning. Whiteaker's one-out, two-run home run to center field cut the Herd's lead to 4-2. Whiteaker's first career home run ended Harter's streak of 22 consecutive scoreless innings in C-USA play and 24 2/3 innings in her last four-plus outings.

UTEP completed its comeback in the fifth inning, taking its first lead of the second game, 6-4. Kelly Lombard and Simone Holland led off with back-to-back singles. Following an Ashley Perez walk, Lombard scored on Meghan Stone's RBI sacrifice fly.

DeAnna Camacho then plated Holland with an RBI single, knotting the game at four apiece. Two batters later, Whiteaker plated Perez and Camacho with a two-RBI single to left field, giving the Miners their first and decisive lead of game two.

Marshall concludes its three-game Conference USA road series against UTEP Sunday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. (EDT).
