HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall softball (26-30, 13-11 C-USA) utilized a five-run sixth inning to defeat LA Tech (19-33, 7-16 C-USA) and complete the series sweep Sunday afternoon. The Thundering Herd earned the 8-4 victory at Dot Hicks Field on Senior Day to complete the regular season.

"What a way to finish the regular season," coach Shonda Stanton said. "I'm so proud of our group."

Sophomore Kaelynn Greene (Eastvale, Calif.) recorded her 76th hit of the season with an infield single in the bottom of the fourth to set a new Marshall single-season record, which she later extended to 77.

On Senior Day, senior Savanah Webster (Las Vegas, Nev.) connected for her seventh home run of the season, a two-run blast over the center field wall. Webster went 2-for-3 on the day with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI.

Sophomores Katalin Lucas (Agua Dulce, Calif.) and Raquel Escareno (Wellington, Colo.) each delivered 3-for-4 perfomances. Lucas had one RBI, while Escareno recorded two.

Marshall 8, LA Tech 4
After a leadoff single, LA Tech capitalized on two Marshall errors in the top of the first inning to score the first run of the game, before a double allowed two more runs to score, 3-0.

Marshall got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Escareno connected for an RBI single to drive home freshman Morgan Zerkle (Milton, W.Va.), who had reached on a single. The Herd stranded two runners in scoring position to end the inning trailing 3-1.

After sophomore Shaelynn Braxton (Woodbridge, Va.) reached with a one-out double in the bottom of the third, Webster tied the game at three with a two-run homer, 3-3.

Marshall threatened in the bottom of the fifth by loading the bases with one out. The Herd put runners on with a walk and three singles but was unable to push the leading run across when a double play ended the inning.

LA Tech took the lead in the top of the sixth after a one-out double put a runner in scoring position, who later came around to give the Lady Techsters a 4-3 lead.

The Herd answered to take its first lead of the game in the bottom of the inning when it exploded for five runs. Zerkle delivered a two-RBI triple to score junior Kristina Braxton (Woodbridge, Va.), who had reached on a fielder’s choice, and Greene, who had reached on a single.

A throwing error on an attempted pick off then allowed Zerkle to score. After Webster drew a walk, Escareno and Lucas delivered back-to-back RBI doubles before LA Tech was able to record the final out of the inning, 8-4.

Fadnek and the Marshall defense recorded three quick outs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

Marshall recorded 14 hits compared to LA Tech’s four. The Herd committed two errors, while the Lady Techsters committed one.
