BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Marshall softball team dropped two decisions, 4-2; 3-0, against the UAB Blazers on Saturday afternoon. The Herd will close out the regular season and the three-game series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Thundering Herd falls to 19-31-1 overall and 5-16-1 in Conference USA with the pair of losses at UAB Softball Field. Alysia Hively homered her eighth career long ball in game one but the two-run shot was not enough as MU was unable to stave off the third-ranked Blazers who improve to 35-15 and 15-5 in conference play.
Game One: UAB 4, Marshall 2
The series started with a blast as Alysia Hively put the Herd ahead 2-0 in the opening frame with her seventh long ball of the year, scoring pinch runner Morgan Cottrell who was on courtesy of a Rebecca Gamby single to left.
UAB tied and took the lead in the second when Caley Walden started the frame with a single to left center that brought around Lauren Webster. Sallie Van Kirk then made it 2’s across the board as she scampered home on a wild pitch – which forced the Herd to call up Natalee Pulver in relief for Andi Williamson who exited the circle after 1.2 innings worked and three strikeouts.
Catherine Douglass topped the three-run frame with a RBI-single to center that plated Walden and gave the Blazers a 3-2 lead heading into the third.
Adding safety with a two-run cushion, Mandy Lowman led off with a home run to center as the board continued to get action at 4-2 in the bottom of the third.
Top hitters for the Herd were Jessica Hughes and Samantha Spurlock. Hughes went 1-for-2 while Spurlock was a perfect 1-for-1.
Both teams held each other scoreless through the remainder of the contest giving UAB’s Leigh Streetman her 13th win after her 3.2 inning four-strikeout performance. Williamson garnered the loss for the Herd, dropping her to 7-11 on the year.
Game Two: UAB 3, Marshall 0
UAB opened the second game of the twin bill with a three-run homer by Kayla Orr to go up an uncontested 3-0 in the bottom of the first. The opening frame was all it took for the Blazers to hold on for the 3-0 shutout.
Erika Bennett started on the rubber for Marshall only to be relieved by Rachel Rillo after facing four batters. Rillo closed out the final six innings fanning six en route to Marshall’s loss. Streetman went the distance and picked up her second victory of the day, improving to 14-7 on the year while Bennett falls to 2-6.
Bri Anna Hope finished 1-for-2 at the dish while also reaching via a walk.
