Marshall 3, Houston 1
May 11, 2013
MARSHALL HEAD COACH Shonda Stanton
"Andi Williamson was perfect on the weekend. This game is all about the moments for the kids. Katalin Lucas, our catcher, had been struggling a little bit, and she came up big today. She said, `Thanks for trusting me.' I told her that I did not do anything. That was all her. I am really proud of our kids. We did a great job hanging tough in all sorts of situations. Houston is one heck of a ball team. I have always respected Kyla Holas and what she has done with this program. They are always winners and always have great athletes. This is a big win for us, getting to the championship game as the four seed and doing what we did. This is for all of the girls who have ever worn the green and white. This is our twentieth anniversary of Marshall Softball. We have so many special people, and I am so proud of the way our student-athletes represented today."
On finishing the year strong
"When we were 2-7 at the beginning of the year, we told the girls that this was going to be the best team in Marshall's history. We always believed that. We had six seniors who left and eleven new kids who just had to come together and perform. There were times this season when things did not go well this season. I congratulated our team during the bad times and also when did great things like winning at Houston earlier this season. It is nice to congratulate them throughout the season and tell them that they were the best team in history and then for it to actually be true."
MARSHALL PITCHER Andi Williamson
On winning the championship
"Our main goal was to win it. I am still so speechless. I still cannot believe that it happened. We are going to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. That has been our main goal since the beginning. We said that we would not be satisfied with second place, and that showed with the determination that we played with all game."
On pitching for the third straight game
"I just go out there and do my best. I was definitely a little nervous. I am just thankful that we won, and I am just thankful that we had the chance to play in this championship game. This was my vision. It seemed like déjà vu."
On continuing the season
"I am glad that we are ready to celebrate, but we have to get back home and get to work. I won't be satisfied with just getting to regionals. We just need to work hard and keep our season going."
