HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall softball team exploded offensively in two fall ball wins over Shawnee State, 12-2 and 30-0, at Dot Hicks Field Saturday afternoon.
Senior Morgan Zerkle got the Herd rolling with a leadoff home run in game one. Zerkle followed that up with a three run home run in her second plate appearance. Fellow senior Shaelynn Braxton drove in five runs in helping lead Marshall to the 12-2 victory.
The Herd collected 16 hits in game one and nine stolen bases. Juniors Eloise Tribolet and Elicia D’Orazio combined to grab six of the thefts.
Game two did not start off with a home run as Zerkle was walked. However, Marshall recorded 27 hits including two more blasts on the way to the 30-0 win. Zerkle crushed her third of the day and Braxton cranked a grand slam in the third inning. The Herd scored a game high 10 runs in the fourth inning. Junior Taylor McCord and sophomore Briana Daiss hit two doubles apiece. Junior Jordan Colliflower ripped a three run triple in the fourth.
All four pitchers for the Herd entered the circle in the doubleheader. Freshman Kailee Williamson started game one and pitched through the fourth. Sophomore Ali Burdette pitched innings five and six and then sophomore Abigail Tolbert finished the game throwing the seventh. In game two, senior Jordan Dixon started and went the first four innings and then was followed by Tolbert and Burdette.

The teams agreed to play all seven innings of both contests to allow pitchers for both teams time in the circle.

Marshall will return to the field Sunday, Oct. 9, as the team travels to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Buckeyes at 11 a.m. and then the Eastern Michigan Eagles at 1:30 p.m. The final two fall ball exhibition contests will be a doubleheader against Team Toronto Friday, Oct. 14, at Dot Hicks Field with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
