HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Conference USA softball coaches have ranked Marshall third in the league’s 2014 preseason poll, while Thundering Herd sophomores Kaelynn Greene and Shaelynn Braxton were selected to the all-conference preseason team.
Marshall won the C-USA Tournament title last season, and advanced to the NCAA regionals in Lexington, Ky. Despite losing six seniors and five starters from that team, the Herd moved up two spots from last preseason, ranking third on the 13-team poll behind defending C-USA regular-season champion UAB and No. 2 Tulsa.
Greene (Eastvale, Calif.) and Braxton (Woodbridge, Va.) caught the eye of C-USA coaches with their 2013 conference performances. Greene led the Herd in hitting with a .354 batting average, a team-leading 28 hits and 13-for-15 on steals, while Braxton had a team-high five homers and 18 RBI in conference action. Greene was selected as one of three outfielders, while Braxton is one of two utility picks on the 13-player team.
The Herd will swing into the 2014 season with its annual Diamond Club Banquet on Feb. 7, with keynote speaker Monica Abbott. The 2013 championship team will be recognized at the banquet, which will be followed by a Feb. 8 pitching clinic where Abbott, former Herd star and NPF Rookie of the year Andi Williamson and Marshall’s new pitching coach, Chanda Bell, will lead the instruction.
The 2014 season will begin Feb. 14, in the Tiger Invitational at Auburn, Ala., against Western Illinois and host Auburn.
