Softball Falls to 1-1 After Loss to Bowling Green
MU vs. BGSU
Las Cruces, NM- The Marshall University Thundering Herd Softball Team dropped a tough contest to Bowling Green State University Friday on New Mexico State University’s Presley Askew Field. The Herd evened its record to 1-1 with the loss after defeating New Mexico State earlier in the day.
“It was disappointing not to be able to break anything open offensively,” head coach Shonda Stanton said. “ We ran ourselves out of some innings, but that’s our style of play. Overall I was pleased with our first day out and feel there were many positives to build on.”
Marshall loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning, but it was Bowling Green (2-0) who drew first blood. The Falcons scored two runs in the top of the fourth off a base hit and a pair of walks to take a 2-0 lead. BGSU then added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on a pair of Marshall errors.
Sara Spenia (Las Vegas, NV) laced a single down the right field line to move runners into scoring position in the sixth, but the Herd couldn’t push a run across the plate.
Marshall could only muster three hits in the contest and fell by the final of 4-0. De’Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, CA) received the loss on the mound, giving up five hits. The Herd was caught stealing three times in the contest.
Marshall will continue action in the New Mexico State University Tournament on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. as they take on Indiana University in Las Cruces, NM.
