Softball Falls to Cleveland State After Delay

Dean at bat versus Cleveland State

Huntington, W.Va.- The Marshall University softball team (6-10) fell to Cleveland State University, 4-3 in the second game of the Marshall Spring Classic sponsored by Hampton Inn. A rain delay in the top of the fifth inning loomed large for the Herd as the Vikings came out swinging after the break.

Marshall struck first scoring a run in the bottom of the third as Nichole Corrigan (Corona, Calif.) scored on a sacrifice fly by De?Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Calif.). Cleveland State came right back to score in the top of the fourth, sneaking a run home on a run down. The Herd however, kept their bats going in the bottome half of the inning as Carrie Dean (Paradise, Calif.) singled and Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) doubled to lead off the inning. Missy Workman (Huntington, W.Va.) came in to run for Dean and later scored on a Viking error. This put Marshall up 2-1 when the lightning and rain moved in.

After a delay for approximately an hour Cleveland State came out to put a run on the board in the top of the fifth. The Vikings Jackie Miller added to that run total in the top of the sixth when she belted a two run home run.

Marshall?s Dean had an answer for the Vikings as she blasted a powerful home run over the fence in left field, but unfortunately for the Herd no one was on base. Marshall couldn?t push a run across in the seventh and fell by the final of 4-3.

Tournament action will continue all day tomorrow. Marshall will face Oakland University at 10:00 a.m. and University of Dayton at noon.
