HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – After taking two of three from Houston during the opening weekend of Conference USA play, Marshall hits the road to do battle with the Memphis Tigers for a three game battle starting Saturday.
Game one of the series will be televised by FSN on a variety of outlets nationwide. Bruce Howard (play-by-play) and Tracy Warren (color analyst) will be on the call for the 5 p.m. contest. Fox Sports Net Ohio and Root Sports Pittsburgh will carry the game locally.
The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader will start at 7 p.m. The third and final game of the C-USA battle will get underway at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Thundering Herd (12-10, 2-1 C-USA) opened up C-USA with two straight wins when Marshall and pitcher Andi Williamson shut down Houston. Williamson, a junior pitcher from Harts, West Virginia struck out 20 Cougar batters last Saturday with 10 strike outs in each contest. The junior is the conference leader in terms of earned run average at 1.92.
With the first NCAA statistical rankings released, Marshall found itself ranked first in the country in stolen base per game. 72 steals for The Herd gives the squad an average of 3.27 stolen bases a game and is one of three teams in the country with an average of three or more swipes per game. Ashley Gue leads MU with 16 steals while Taylor Thompson is a perfect 14-for-14 on the season.
Memphis (6-19, 0-3 C-USA) was swept by UAB last weekend but rebounded for a midweek victory over UT-Martin. The Tigers top pitcher Ellen Roberts (4-8) picked up the win. Roberts and her fellow pitchers have combined for 153 strike outs for second best in C-USA. Morgan Mosby has the Tigers best batting average at .350 while preseason all-conference selection Jessica Phillips leads her club with 14 runs batted in.
