HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall softball (10-20) will step away from Conference USA action this weekend and travel to Starkville, Miss., to face host Mississippi State (25-10) in a three-game series.
This will be a first for both schools. The teams nor their coaches have met on the diamond prior to this weekend.
HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall earned a series victory against Conference USA foe East Carolina last weekend. The Herd swept a doubleheader with 9-1 (6 innings) and 7-1 wins, before dropping the final game of the series 9-1 (6) the following day.
Sophomores Kaelynn Greene (Eastvale, Calif.) and Shaelynn Baxton (Woodbridge, Va.) lead the Herd offensively with .400 and .352 batting averages, respectively. The duo also holds the top two hit totals for Marshall, and Braxton leads the team with 10 home runs and 27 RBI.
Freshman Morgan Zerkle (Milton, W.Va.) is batting.308 average behind 28 hits. She ranks third behind Greene and Braxton in both categories. The freshman recorded four steals in the Herd's victory over UNC-Wilmington earlier last week, giving her 23 on the season - ranked No. 9 in the nation.
The Herd has connected for seven home runs in six games. Braxton delivered four long balls, while senior Savanah Webster (Las Vegas, Nev.) contributed two and sophomore Raquel Escareno (Wellington, Colo.) added one.
Braxton now sits tied for eighth in Marshall's all-time individual season records. The sophomore tied with alumnae Jazmine Valle (2010, `12) and Leigh Wintter (2005).
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS (25-10)
Mississippi State is coming off a three-game winning streak, beginning with a 5-2 victory in the series finale against Auburn and continuing on to two consecutive midweek wins against Southeastern Louisiana (2-1) and Samford (9-1).
The Bulldogs are led offensively by Carolina Seitz. The freshman holds a .349 batting average behind team-leading hits (37), doubles (13), triples (3), homers (7), total bases (77) and slugging percentage (.726).
Mississippi State is 59-of-74 on stolen bases, while opponents are 6-of-12.
The pitching responsibilities fall on three sets of shoulders - redshirt senior Alison Owen (11-7), sophomore Jacey Punches (7-1) and freshman Alexis Silkwood (7-2). Together, the hurlers hold a team 2.09 ERA behind 269 strikeouts. Owen has 140 of the strikeouts.
Marshall will return home to Dot Hicks Field for a midweek doubleheader against Radford on April 2, before returning to C-USA play against Middle Tennessee State in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
