HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University softball team (18-19, 3-9 C-USA) will head back to the friendly confines of Dot Hicks Field as it sets to host UCF (22-17, 7-4 C-USA) in a three-game conference series starting Saturday.
The Herd returns after playing 10 road games and will play nine-straight contests at home beginning with UCF. First pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start. The final game of the series is set for noon on Sunday.
Marshall University’s M-Club will hold a special presentation before Saturday’s 1 p.m. game as M-Club President Steve Williams will honor former softball players Jessica and Amanda Williams.
The Thundering Herd returns after splitting a non-conference doubleheader at Morehead State on Wednesday. MU received strong performances from Katie Murphree, who tallied the win in the 4-2 victory, pushing her to 11-10 on the year. The senior struck out five and helped the Marshall defense retire the final 11 batters of the contest.
At the plate, Caitlyn Jackson hit 6-for-8 against the Eagles, posting a pair of three-hit games. Jackson is second on the club in batting average this season, hitting at a .331 clip, and leads the squad in hits with 40. In conference play, the senior posts a club-high .325 batting average, six runs, 13 hits and five doubles.
Tops at the dish is Rebecca Gamby, who has a team-best batting average of .333, a .415 on-base percentage and 11 doubles. Alianna Telles will add assistance offensively for the Herd as the sophomore leads the team in runs scored (23), home runs (9) and RBI (27).
Telles recorded her first multiple home-run performance in the Herd’s loss at MSU on Wednesday. She is just the fifth player this season in C-USA to record a pair of homers in a single game.
The Knights are paced offensively by Natalie Land, who is hitting .292 for the year and .367 in C-USA action. Land leads the team in hits (31) and stolen bases (14). Top pitcher for UCF is Ashleigh Cole (14-10) – Cole holds a 1.60 ERA on a staff that has a 1.85 ERA overall and a 1.14 ERA in C-USA.
All Marshall fans are encouraged to wear green to Saturday’s “Green Out” game – fans can also get their faces painted at the game.
Middle School & Elementary School Day- Local elementary and middle school students in the tri-state area are invited to attend.
YMCA Day- All active members of the YMCA are invited to cheer on the Thundering Herd!
Super Hero Day- Marshall softball would like to recognize all of our local “Mr. & Ms. Incredible’s” for all that they contribute to the community! Big Brothers Big Sisters of Huntington, Special Olympics, Make A Wish and local Boys & Girls Clubs are invited to spend the day watching the Herd take on UCF.
Little League Day- Local elementary and middle school, youth, junior Olympic and YMCA teams are invited to attend and wear green.
