CLEVELAND -- For their efforts in a 4-1 week, Marshall?s Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) have been named Mid-American Conference East Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office on Monday.

Williams played a critical role for Marshall this weekend both offensively and defensively. The junior went 6-for-16 in the Herd?s five games, including multiple-hit performances in a game two win at Western Michigan and a 8-0 defeat of Miami in game three. Marshall took four games on the week behind her .375 batting average and .611 slugging percentage. She scored four runs including two in game two versus WMU and launched a home run deep over the centerfield fence against Miami. That home run was only the third hit at Miami Softball Field this season with the other pair coming via Herd players. She also picked up two doubles, three RBI, a stolen base and an outfield assist to help Marshall pace the East Division. This is her third weekly award this season.

Nielson completed one her best weeks in her already decorated career, going 3-0 in three critical MAC contests en route to her second pitcher of the week. On Wednesday, she held Western Michigan scoreless on three hits. In her pair of wins against Miami (Ohio), the senior gave up only one earned run and six hits, including a one-hitter in game three against the RedHawks. On the week, the Tucson, Ariz., native, boasted a .36 ERA in 19 innings pitched, surrendering a mere one earned run and nine hits while walking eight. The opposition struggled against the righthander all week, as Nielson struck out 12 and held opponents to a .147 batting average. She is riding a six-game winning streak.

The pair of recognitions push MU?s count to a league-best seven this season.

The Herd squares off with cross-river rival Ohio University this weekend in a three-game series beginning on Saturday.
