HUNTINGTON, W.Va.--The Marshall softball team (27-17, 11-7 C-USA) will travel to Athens, Ohio for a nonconference matchup against the Ohio Bobcats (19-20, 4-8 MAC) Wednesday, April 17. The doubleheader was originally going to begin at 2 p.m. ET, but has been pushed back to begin at 4 p.m. ET.
Marshall and Ohio have met 47 times in the past with the Thundering Herd holding a 29-18 advantage. The Herd swept a doubleheader last season, winning both games in five innings via the mercy rule.
In the first game, Marshall won 17-6 and set school records for runs scored, RBIs (17) and total bases (26). Senior Alysia Hively drove in seven runs in the game to set a new Marshall record. Her 9 total bases and two home runs put her in a tie for second place in both categories in the Herd's record book.
In game two, Marshall defeated Ohio 10-0, again in five innings. The Herd drew nine walks and recorded five hits en route to picking up the shutout victory.
Marshall is coming off of a three-game series sweep at the hands of the East Carolina Pirates, the second C-USA sweep the Herd has suffered this season.
Senior Ashley Gue leads Marshall with a .370 batting average in nonconference play, as well as in overall action with a .341 mark. Gue is one stolen base away from tying Jessica Hughes for second place on the Herd's stolen base record list. Seniors Jazmine Valle and Hively have also been offensive powerhouses in nonconference games this season. Valle has recorded 14 RBIs and hit three home runs, while Hively has driven in 12 and launched four home runs.
Ohio enters Wednesday's contest on a seven-game losing streak. During that span, the Bobcats have dropped contests with Bowling Green, Ohio State, Miami (Ohio) and Ball State. Senior Lauren Gellermen leads Ohio offensively with a .398 average, 33 runs scored, 17 home runs and 45 RBIs. She holds the teams most hits (49), a total that includes nine doubles and two triples, both team-highs.
Freshman Savannah Jo Dorsey and sophomore Lauren McClary have handled the bulk of the responsibilities for the Bobcats in the circle this season. Dorsey has made 28 appearances with 15 starts and currently boasts a 9-7 record and 3.78 ERA. McClary has started 19 games and appeared in 27 for an 8-11 record and 4.20 ERA.
After Wednesday's doubleheader, Marshall will have a ten-day break before resuming play. During that time the Herd will practice and prepare to kick off the final leg of its schedule for a three-game series against C-USA opponent UAB April 27-28 in Birmingham, Ala.
