HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Softball players Rebecca Gamby and Jessica Hughes have been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District teams, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Both of the Thundering Herd players earned their spot on the team by enjoying a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and above. They each received enough votes to earn one of the 11 spots of the District 2 first team.

Gamby will be graduating from Marshall this weekend with a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with a cumulative GPA of 3.72. The Mount Victory, Ohio native is currently enjoying her best season-to-date with a team high .357 batting average. This is her second time to be recognized by CoSIDA (2010).

Hughes meanwhile will receive her master’s degree this weekend in Accounting with a cumulative GPA of 3.90. The Stillwater, Oklahoma native has already received her bachelor’s degree from Marshall. She is currently batting .295 on the season with 21 stolen bases. This is Hughes’ first honor from CoSIDA.

Marshall was one of three C-USA schools to be recognized this season. The Herd was the only school to have two honorees. East Carolina and Houston each have a player in their respective districts.

Both seniors will wrap the regular season this weekend with UCF at home on Saturday and Sunday. The Herd can finish the season as high as third, but must sweep all three games from the Knights to do so.
