The Marshall University softball team had four student-athletes pick up postseason accolades Wednesday at the Conference banquet in El Paso, Texas.
Senior Joscelyn Bitner (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up her third all-conference selection behind named to the all-conference second team outfielder. As a freshman she was named to the freshman team and second team as a sophomore.
This season, Bitner leads the team with a .376 batting average and 53 hits. She is ranked national in sacrifice hits and is second on the team with 23 stolen bases.
For the second year in a row, the Thundering Herd had a player named as Co-Newcomer of the Year as junior Katie Murphree (Tallahassee, Fla.) shares the awards with UAB's Martina Landrum. Marshall has had a player, pitcher or newcomer of the year in six out of the last seven seasons.
In her first season with Marshall after attending Santa Fe CC, Murphree leads the team in pitching with 13 wins and 2.37 ERA. She has struck out 93 batters and has 13 complete games and two one-hit shutouts.
Freshmen Alianna Telles (Sylmar, Calif.) and Rebecca Gamby (Mount Victory, Ohio) were both named to the All-Freshman Team. Telles and Gamby are tied leading the team in home runs at seven and both have 26 RBIs. Telles is batting .286 while Gamby is hitting .255.
These four and the rest of the Herd will play tomorrow at 2 p.m. EST in the opening round of the Conference USA tournament against UCF. Gametracker will be available and WMUL 88.1 FM will broadcast the game on the air and at http://www.marshall.edu/wmul.
