This is first time Jessica Hughes has been named C-USA All-Academic

May 8, 2012

IRVING, Texas –Rebecca Gamby and Jessica Hughes have been named to the Conference USA Softball All-Academic Team for 2012, as announced by the conference Tuesday.

This is the second such honor for these seniors this season. Previously they were named to the Capital One Academic All-District team last week.

The C-USA Al-Academic team is voted on by sports information contacts at the nine conference schools competing in softball. To be eligible, student-athletes must hold a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, be of at least sophomore academic standing and have competed in at least 60 percent of games this season as a starter or key reserve.

Gamby was named to the all-academic team for the second time after graduating this semester with a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with a cumulative GPA of 3.72. The Mount Victory, Ohio native is currently enjoying her best season-to-date with a.342 batting average, which is tied for the team lead. Her hits (51), doubles (11), and RBI (29) are all second on the team. This is her 10th academic honor she has received while a member of the Thundering Herd.

Hughes meanwhile received her master’s degree this weekend in Accounting with a cumulative GPA of 3.90. The Stillwater, Oklahoma native has already received her bachelor’s degree from Marshall. She is currently batting .284 on the season with 21 stolen bases. Previously this season she became the second person in Marshall history to steal 100 career bases and the fifth to participate in 200 games. This is Hughes’ first time appearing on the C-USA All-Academic team.

Marshall was one of three schools to have two representatives make the All-Academic team. Tulsa and UAB were the others.

Along with Gamby and Hughes, Marshall will begin its pursuit of a Conference USA tournament title on Thursday in Birmingham, Ala. The Herd will play East Carolina in the first round at 5:30 p.m. ET.
