Top Seed @HerdSB to Take on WKU in C-USA Tournament

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The top seeded Marshall softball team will begin its journey at the Conference USA Tournament, Thursday at 3 p.m., eastern against the No. 8 seed WKU Hilltoppers. The Thundering Herd finished the regular season 40-8 overall and 20-4 in conference. Marshall won the C-USA Regular Season Title, and go into the tournament ranked 23rd in the country.
The Herd features the Conference USA Player of the Year (Morgan Zerkle), Pitcher of the Year (Jordan Dixon) and Coach of the Year (Shonda Stanton). Six Marshall players were honored as all-conference selections.

The Opponent: WKU Hilltoppers
The Series
Marshall swept the season series over WKU on March 25-26 at Dot Hicks Field. The wins were part of the Herd’s 17-game winning streak, and the game three win broke Marshall’s single-season record for consecutive wins with 15. The previous mark of 14 was set in 2013. In game one, Marshall scored all five of its runs in the third off four hits and four errors. In the second game, WKU jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the fourth. However, the Herd bats came firing back scoring three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth. Abigail Estrada drove in two runs in the fifth to give Marshall the lead. In the sixth, the first five batters who came to the plate all reached base safely and scored as well. Jordan Dixon struck two batters in the seventh to close out the win. In the series finale, WKU held a one-run lead going into the fifth. Marshall tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Briana Daiss that score Morgan Zerkle. In the sixth, Elizabeth DeShields, Eloise Tribolet and Elicia D’Orazio all scored to give the Herd a three-run lead. Once again, Dixon struck out two of the final three batters for the win.
Scouting the Hilltoppers
The eight seed WKU Hilltoppers played seven total hours in surviving through elimination Wednesday of the first round of the Conference USA Tournament. The Hilltoppers had a four-run lead over UAB in the first game of the day, before the Blazers scored four in the bottom of the seventh. The game continued tied at 7-7 until the top of the 12th when WKU scored five runs. Adarian Gray ripped a three-run double into the left-center gap to grab the lead. The game took 4 hours and 43 minutes and featured 30 total hits. After a game in between, WKU took the field around 8 p.m. central time against the four seed Florida Atlantic Owls. FAU took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. WKU fought back scoring two in the sixth and then tying the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh. Finally in the ninth, the Hilltoppers scored two runs to take the lead and then held on in the bottom of the ninth as the Owls scored one to cut the deficit to one. However, the Hilltoppers got a fly out to right field to end the game and move on to Thursday.
