World Cup of Softball XII Schedule
OKLAHOMA CITY - The World Cup of Softball XII begins Wednesday, July 5, at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium Complex in Oklahoma City. Two former and one current Marshall softball player will suit up this week as Morgan Zerkle (USA), Erika Bennett (Mexico) and Elicia D'Orazio (Puerto Rico) take the field.
All of the games will be live streamed and a few select games will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN2. The Saturday, July 8, contest between USA and Puerto Rico will be televised on ESPN2 and is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. eastern.
The World Cup of Softball features No 1. ranked Japan, No. 2 USA, No. 3 Canada, No. 4 Australia, No. 7 Puerto Rico, No. 10 Mexico, No. 17 Philippines and the USA Softball Junior Women's National Team (JWNT). The tournament is a round robin format, which will feed into the Championship Playoff Round on Sunday, July 9.
Rising Marshall senior, and reigning NCAA Golden Shoe Award winner, D'Orazio is in her fifth season competing for Puerto Rico. She first took the field for international competition in 2013 and has helped her team to a No. 7 ranking in the world in 2017. In the World Cup XI in 2016, Puerto Rico finished 4-2 while D'Orazio collected six hits, score four runs and stole three bases. This past season for the green and white saw the Clermont, Fla., native lead the country in stolen bases with 59 that set the Marshall and Conference USA single-season record. D'Orazio was named All-Conference USA second-team while helping take Marshall to a top 25 ranking and an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Zerkle is in her first season with the USA Women's National Team after spending 2016 with the USA Elite Team. The Milton, W.Va., native competed in the World Cup of Softball XI going 4-for-6 at the plate, scored five runs, drove in three, stole two bases and launched a towering homer to right against Mexico. Zerkle finished her Marshall career as one of the school's most decorated athletes, regardless of sport. In 2017, she was named the Conference USA Player of the Year, finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, first-team Senior CLASS Award All-American, CoSIDA Academic All-America, second-team NFCA All-America and most recently the C-USA Female Athlete of the Year.
Bennett spent two seasons pitching for Marshall after transferring from Miami Dade Junior College that won the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I softball title in 2010. She was a member of the Class of 2012 and helped the Herd reach the first of three-straight Conference USA Tournament Championship games. Bennett is in her fifth season pitching for Mexico. The Hereford, Ariz., native spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Florida Gulf Coast University and just recently accepted an assistant coaching position with UTEP.
