HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Athletics is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the softball program, Sept. 15-17. It is also Hall of Fame weekend as nine more Herd greats will be inducted, including one of softball’s best, Amanda Williams (2003-06).
“It is an exciting time for us to celebrate the 25th year of our softball program being instated here at Marshall University,” Assistant Director for Athletic Development for the Big Green Scholarship Foundation Taylor Strickland said. “The softball program has become one of the premiere programs in such a short amount of time and we can't wait to honor all those that have been a part of the success.
“The M Club is inviting all former players, coaches and trainers to be part of the celebratory weekend.”
Marshall softball had its origins with a club team from 1978-1981. The softball program officially started as a university sponsored sport with the 1993-94 season and played its first game on March 5, 1994 against Dayton. The Herd defeated the Flyers 10-6.
717 wins, 360 academic honors, 223 conference accolades, 159 student-athletes, five conference championships and three All-Americans later the softball program has repeatedly displayed its excellence. The 2017 season was arguably the best in its history with a record of 42-12, the Conference USA Regular Season title, an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament, leading the nation in stolen bases (individually and as a team) and a final Top 25 USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll of No. 24.
During the celebratory weekend, the Hall of Fame banquet will take place, Friday Sept. 15, as Williams will be honored for her record-breaking play during her days wearing the Green and White. There will be an alumni social after the banquet. On Saturday Sept. 16 at 10:30 a.m., the softball alum will play a game at Dot Hicks Field just prior to the 2017-18 team taking the field for a fall ball exhibition contest at 1 p.m.
Beginning at 4 p.m., there will be a softball alum tailgate at the M Club Pavilion. Then during the Marshall vs. Kent State football game, kickoff at 6:30 p.m., there will be an on-field recognition for the softball program.
All former players, coaches, trainers and softball staff who wish to attend need to RSVP to Taylor Strickland. She can be reached by email at email@example.com and by phone 304-696-3385.
