HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall softball has announced the Lil Sis program is now available for the 18th year for the 2017-18 season.
The program continues on under new Herd head coach Jen Steele. The amount of participants has grown each year and the Marshall players are excited for another season of befriending and mentoring the young ladies.
“The Lil Sis program has become one of my favorites things about our program,” senior catcher Taylor McCord said. “As athletes it reminds us why we started playing the game to begin with, and it reminds us to always have fun with the game.
“We all had players that we looked up to when we were younger and to be able to be ‘that player’ for young girls in the community is something we will all carry with us for a long time.”
The program is open to girls in grades 1-8 and runs from September to May. The Lil Sis program allows an opportunity for girls in the community to adopt a player as a friend, role model and mentor.
“Being able to give back to the community who always gives us so much and build relationships with the young girls in this program is so rewarding,” McCord added.
To become a Lil Sis, interested participants should fill out the Lil Sis Brochure found here and on Herdzone.com. A $20 membership fee is required. Should two or more friends wish to sign-up at the same time, a $5 discount will apply to each girl’s fee. A returning Lil Sis member from 2016-17 is also awarded a $5 discount upon signing up.
The young girls get to have the player they adopt to be a pen pal as well as the team exchanges letters with their Lil Sis’s. It also allows the current Marshall players to experience the effect that is has on the community as the growth of the program has expanded year after year. Many girls return and some have even become Marshall softball players.
