HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall softball will begin its 2012 fall exhibition schedule Sunday when it host Kentucky for one game at Dot Hicks Field.
First pitch between the two squads will be at 1 p.m. They will play just one game.
The Thundering Herd’s matchup versus the Wildcats will be part of an eight game fall schedule, with seven of the games being played at home. Marshall’s lone game away from Dot Hicks Field will be against the NPF All-Stars at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.
Head Coach Shonda Stanton begins her 14th year at the helm of the Herd’s softball program. Her squad a year ago went 36-21, well enough for a third place regular season finish in Conference USA. Marshall went on to finish as runner-ups in the C-USA tournament, falling 3-2 to Tulsa.
There will be 10 returners for Stanton, including all-conference pitcher Andi Williamson, winner of a school record 25 wins last season. The West Virginia native also struck out 268 opposing batters a season ago, two behind Sara Gulla for the Marshall single-season mark.
Additional returners for the green and white includes fellow all-conference selection, Jazmine Valle who was also the team leader in home runs with 10. C-USA all-tournament selection Ashley Gue returns, she is fifth in career stolen bases with 77. Those three will mix in with 11 newcomers.
Kentucky was a participant in the NCAA Tournament for a fourth straight time last season. The Wildcats compiled a 30-30 record, which included 12 wins against ranked opponents. Head coach for UK is Rachel Lawson, who enters her fifth season in Lexington. Her team finished fifth in the mighty SEC a season ago, a first for a Lawson led team.
