HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall softball team will conclude its fall ball competition Saturday. The Herd will play at 11 a.m. against West Virginia State before facing off against West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m.

HAVE YOU HERD?
The Herd is 5-1 in competition this fall and 4-0 at home. Marshall defeated Charleston (W. Va.) 4-2 in the first game of a doubleheader last weekend. Freshman Morgan Zerkle (Milton, W.Va.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while sophomore Kaelynn Greene (Eastvale, Calif.) drove in two runs with an inside-the-park homerun to help the Herd pick up a 4-2 victory over Charleston.

In Game 2, Taylor Winton (Federal Way, Wash.) smashed a two-run homer against Ohio Valley that helped push Marshall ahead of the Fighting Scots and seal a 5-1 victory.

QUEENS OF DIAMONDS
The Herd will start off the 2013-14 year right - as reigning 2013 Conference USA Champions. Marshall clinched its first C-USA Championship in a 3-1 victory against Houston May 11.

The Herd's momentum carried into its first regional appearance, where it took two teams into extra innings and claimed its first victory in an NCAA Regional against Notre Dame (3-1).

Marshall hasn't seen action since May 18, when it was knocked out of the NCAA Lexington, Ky., Regional in 13 innings against Virginia Tech (3-2).  The 2012-13 team made it further than any other in Marshall softball history.

SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS
West Virginia State won the WVIAC Tournament in 2013 before competing in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. The Yellow Jackets defeated Kutztown and Shippensburg in the Shippensburg Regional to advance to the NCAA tournament, where they suffered a 6-2 season-ending loss against Bloomsburg. The Yellow Jackets completed the season with a 44-12 (17-4 WVIAC) record. They have 12 players returning from last year's team.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
West Virginia Wesleyan posted a 32-21(16-10 WVIAC) record in 2013. The Bobcats lost to Fairmont State on the second day of the WVIAC tournament to end their season. West Virginia Wesleyan has not released its roster for the upcoming season.

UP NEXT
Saturday's action concludes the Herd's 2013 fall ball campaign. Marshall will resume action in the spring when it looks to defend its C-USA title.
