HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall softball is offering hitting and pitching instructional clinics on Mondays and Tuesdays during the months of December and January.
The clinics are conducted by the Thundering Herd’s assistant coaches. Chelsey Barclay, who enters her third season leading the Marshall pitching staff, will handle the pitching clinics. Fifth year assistant coach Amanda Williams will conduct the hitting clinics.
Instruction resumes Dec. 3 and will run through the end of January. Pitching instruction is taught on Monday nights while hitting will takes place on Tuesday evenings. The two-hour clinics run from 5-7 p.m. during December with the times shifting to 6-8 p.m. in the month of January.
The focus of the clinics is to provide instruction in an organized and structured atmosphere through nine different teaching sessions. Thanks to a limited enrollment and low player-to-teacher ratio, each camper will receive quality instruction to maximize development.
Barclay has led Marshall’s pitching staff for the past three seasons. During last year’s campaign, her staff compiled a 2.23 earned run average, which was third best in Conference USA and fifth best all-time at Marshall. She also coached Andi Williamson, who as junior last year set a Marshall single-season record for wins with 25 and registered 268 strikeouts, two shy of the Herd’s single-season record.
Williams is a former four-year starter in center field for Marshall. Now entering her fifth year as an assistant coach, she has helped put together the fastest teams in Herd history. In 2011, Marshall led the NCAA in stolen bases per game (2.52). Last season the Herd was second in the country after stealing 135 bases. Her coaching has led junior Ashley Gue to fifth all-time in stolen bases at 77 during three seasons.
Clinics are open to any and all participants with a maximum 25 hitters and 15 pitchers per clinic session. Dot Hicks Field’s covered batting cages serve as the clinic location.
Participants must register for a minimum of three sessions. Discounts are given to those registering in groups. Individual registrations are $40 per session. Groups of four are $35 per person and session and groups of 10 are $30 each. Teams (more than 10 people) are discounted at $25 per person and session.
