Starkville, Miss. – Marshall Softball was recently honored by The National Fastpitch Coaches Association as an All-Academic Team for the 2010-11 academic year. Additionally, seven members of the Thundering Herd Softball squad were named NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes.
Marshall, as a team, was named an All-Academic Team thanks to their 3.258 team GPA during the 2010-11 academic year, which was third best in Conference USA. The Herd was one of eight C-USA teams named as an All-Academic Team. Head Coach Shonda Stanton’s teams continue to excel in the classroom, as this is the 12th straight season her team has recorded a team GPA of 3.0 or better.
Jessica Ferrick, Rebecca Gamby, Alysia Hively, Jessica Hughes, Amanda Lara, Melanie Stoehr, and Andrea Williamson were all honored as All-America Scholar Athletes thanks to their 3.50 GPA or better during the last academic year.
Stanton spoke about the academic success her team exhibited this past year, “All of these ladies are outstanding student-athletes and we are proud of their continued excellence in the classroom. They have incredible drive in their academic pursuits with bright futures ahead of them. We look forward to the impact they will make in the workplace once they graduate “
Profiles of the seven NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes:
Jessica Ferrick was honored for her second time. The junior is an Accounting and Finance major that earned a 4.00 GPA. She is also a two-time (2009-10 & 2010-11) C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal award winner.
Senior Rebecca Gamby
was honored for the third time of her career. The senior is an Ecology and Evolutionary major with a 3.72 GPA. She was awarded the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal during the 2008-09 academic year. Member of C-USA Academic Team the past two seasons.
Alysia Hively was named a scholar athlete for the third time. The junior is an Exercise Physiology major with a 4.00 GPA. She has been awarded with the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal three times (2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11).
Jessica Hughes was honored as a scholar athlete for her fourth time. The senior accounting and finance major was honored thanks to her 4.00 GPA. She is a four time (2007-08, 2008-’09, 2009-10 & 2010-11) winner of the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal. Named Most Outstanding Accounting Marshall Student last year.
Senior Amanda Lara is an inaugural scholar athlete honorary. She is an exercise physiology major, whom earned a 3.53 GPA last year.
Melanie Stoehr was honored for her fourth time. The four year starter for the Herd completed a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management, where she earned a 3.90 GPA during her last undergraduate year. Stoehr has been awarded the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal three times (2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11). She is currently a Student Assistant for the Herd and pursuing a Master’s degree in Teaching.
Andrea Williamson, junior, was honored for her second time (first time at Marshall). She is an Education major and had a 3.81 GPA last academic year. She was awarded the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal last season.
The NFCA Academic Awards program honors both collegiate and high school teams for their submitted GPAs for the 2010-11 academic year. As a second component of the program, all submitted student-athletes who achieved a 3.50 GPA during the last academic year are named as a NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete.
