Marshall Softball Announces Competitive 2018 Schedule

2018 Spring Schedule

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall softball head coach Jen Steele announced the 2018 spring schedule Wednesday afternoon. The Thundering Herd’s schedule will feature five games against teams that ended the 2017 season ranked, and 14 games against programs that participated in the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
“The 2018 season is going to be a great challenge for our squad,” coach Steele said. “We have put together an exciting pre-season schedule that will allow us to test our abilities against some of the best teams in the country. My staff and I are ready to start the journey with Team 25, as we look to repeat a trip to the NCAA Tournament.”
Eight of Marshall’s first 21 games will be against NCAA Tournament teams. The Herd begins the season at the Plainsman Invitational (Feb. 8-10) hosted by Auburn, and will play Auburn in the first game on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. eastern. The Tigers finished last season ranked No. 13 and lost to the eventual National Champions, Oklahoma, in Super Regionals.
Marshall next heads down to Clearwater, Fla., for the MC National Pediatric Cancer Foundation Invitational (Feb. 16-18) that will feature teams like USF, Missouri and Tennessee. The Volunteers were ranked No. 11 in the final 2017 polls and lost to Texas A&M in Super Regionals.
Following the trip to Florida, the Herd heads to South Carolina (Feb. 23-25) and will play Furman, Presbyterian, Winthrop and perennial NCAA Regional participant USC Upstate.
Marshall’s other tournament during the year is in Columbia, S.C., at the Carolina Classic (March 2-4) hosted by South Carolina. The Gamecocks won 32 games in 2017 and played at the Arizona Regional.
The Herd has 17 home games including Conference USA opponents Southern Miss, FIU, Charlotte and Middle Tennessee coming to Dot Hicks Field. 2017 Mid-American Conference champion Kent State comes to Huntington on Feb. 28 and No. 18 James Madison will also come to Dot Hicks Field for a doubleheader on April 18.
Marshall will travel to Florida Gulf Coast (March 21), Morehead State (April 11), Ohio (April 24), Pittsburgh (April 28) and Louisville (May 2) for other non-conference matchups. In Conference USA contests on the road, the Herd travels to UAB (March 10-11), Florida Atlantic (March 24-25), UTSA (April 7-8) and WKU (April 21-22).
The 2018 Conference USA Tournament will be hosted in Charlotte, N.C., May 9-12.
