Marshall Swimming & Diving Hosts Radford

Radford visits the Fitch Natatorium for a meet on Nov. 3.

Bill Tramel enters his fourth season at the helm of the Marshall Swimming and Diving Program.

In three years, his impact on the program has been staggering.  In 2015, Marshall University enjoyed their best season in school history.  14 of 21 school records were shattered on route to a program best 4th place finish in Conference USA.  The team was also named one of the Top 16 most improved teams in Division 1.  In the classroom, the results were even better, with a team GPA of 3.54, which ranked 5th in the nation among Division 1 Swimming & Diving programs.

Tramel arrived at Marshall University 3 years ago after spending eight seasons with the Minnesota Golden Gophers men & women.  He spent the past two seasons as the Associate Head Coach of the Gophers.
During his time at Minnesota, Tramel coached with Minnesota Hall of Fame coach Dennis Dale, leading the men to conference titles in 2005 and 2007, while posting six Top 11 finishes at the NCAA Championships.  He coached 14 Gopher All-Americans and recruited 2 eventual individual NCAA National Champions.  During his final season at Minnesota, Tramel led the women's team to a Big Ten title, his only year coaching the ladies.

Prior to Minnesota, Tramel was the Head Assistant Coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels.  Over nine years in Chapel Hill, Tramel coached 7 teams to ACC team championships alongside Head Coach Frank Comfort, the winningest coach in ACC history.  Tramel was the primary coach of 40 NCAA All-Americans at UNC and 15 ACC individual event champions.

In 1994-95, Tramel was on the staff at the University of Georgia as the Bulldogs began their rise to a national power.  Under the tutelage of 3-time US Olympic Coach, Jack Bauerle, Tramel assisted in Georgia's first NCAA relay National Championship.  Tramel also acted as recruiting coordinator and helped lay the foundation of three straight national champion Bulldog teams. Tramel's recruiting class won Georgia's first national title when they were seniors.
Tramel began his full-time collegiate coaching career at the University of South Carolina.  In 2 years as USC's Head Men's Assistant, the Gamecocks improved their NCAA finish from 37th to 19th.

Tramel graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Consumer Economics from the University of Missouri where he competed distance freestyle and IM for the Tigers and also was an undergraduate assistant coach.

In total, Tramel has been a part of 10 conference championships teams, (3 Big Ten, 7 ACC), the primary coach of 54 All-Americans, as well as 6 Olympic Trial Finalists.

Coach Tramel was born and raised in St. Louis, MO and graduated from Parkway West High School.  He is an avid St. Louis Blues and NHL hockey fan.
