Joy Kraus joins the Marshall swimming & diving coaching staff for her first year as a volunteer assistant coach. Kraus, wife of current Marshall swimming & diving head coach Leonard Kraus, is currently in her fifth year as the head coach of the Huntington YMCA/Charleston Aquatic Team in Huntington.

Prior to heading the Huntington Aquatic Team, Kraus was the assistant senior coach for the Greater Toledo Aquatic Club from 1998-2001. While at Toledo, she was responsible for assisting in the coaching and training of the USA Swimming Sectional and Senior national level swimmers. She also assisted with meet entries, developed and distributed recruiting flyers for the team and developed swimming and dryland practices for the younger swimmers.

Before arriving in Toledo, Kraus served as the assistant coach at the Cardinal Community Swim Club. While there, she was reponsible for coaching and training of swimmers under the age of eight, while assisting in the coaching of all other swimmers.

She also served as the head coach of the Northside Middle School Swim Team in Muncie, Ind., in 1998, while assisting with the Catalina Swim Club (1997-98) and Ball State University Summer Swim Camps (1994-96).

Kraus is a member of the United States Swim Coaches Association. She is a certified YMCA Swim Coach and has received certified training in Red Cross Safety Training for swim coaches, community CPR and standard first aid. She currently is the West Virginia LSC Coaches Representative and the Safety Chair.

She was a four-time letterwinner at Ball State from 1993-97. She was a four-time All-MAC selection (1994-97) and is the current MAC record holder in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. She was a two-time NCAA Swimming All-American in 1996 and 1997. She was named an NCAA Academic All-American and United States Swimming All-American in 1997. She was also an Olympic Trial Qualifier in 2000.

Kraus earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education with a minor in computer science from Ball State University in 1997.

She is married to current MU swimming & diving head coach Leonard Kraus. They have two children, Alena Irene (6) and Makayla (4). The family resides in Huntington.
