Herd Splits Tri-Meet with Bulldogs, Flames

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Marshall swimming and diving split a tri-meet with a pair of opponents from the Big South Conference Saturday. The Herd defeated UNC Asheville in a rout, 222-72, and lost to Liberty, 160-140, in a battle that came down to the last event.
The Herd managed six first place finishes out of the 16 events that took place, including a sweep of both diving events. Maddie Young and Bailey Basham took the top two spots in the 1-meter dive. Young, Sarah McGlumphy and Basham swept the podium in the 3-meter dive.
Anna Lynch and Angelica di Marzio finished first and second, respectively, in the 1000 free, giving the Herd its first win of the meet in the second event of the day. Lynch finished in 10:17.70, nearly six seconds ahead of di Marzio, who finished with a time of 10:23.26. Oda Gjerde finished in fourth for the Herd with a time of 10:44.29. Lynch also finished first in the 500 free with a time of 5:01.52, more than six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Di Marzio finished the event in fourth with a time of 5:08.12.
Catherine Bendziewicz, Maggie Stovall and Darby Coles placed first, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 free. Bendziewicz won with a time of 51.51, more than three-tenths of a second ahead of the next finisher. Stovall and Coles posted times of 52.42 and 52.71, respectively.



Emma Lockyer, Madeline Schaffer and Caroline Wanner took the top three spots in the 400 IM. Lockyer won the event with a time of 4:26.87, nearly six seconds ahead of Schaffer’s time of 4:32.81. Wanner finished with a time of 4:33.05.

Other top five finishers for the Herd were Stovall (second) and Coles (third) in the 200 free, Jordyn O'Dell (third) in the 100 backstroke, Bendziewicz (second) in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, Schaffer (fourth) in the 200 butterfly, Hannah Robins, who was fifth in the 50 free and third in the 100 butterfly, Wanner (second) and Madi Pulfer (fourth) in the 200 backstroke, Lockyer (third) in the 200 breaststroke and McGlumphy (fifth) in the 1-meter dive.

The Herd will get another opportunity to defeat Liberty in its next meet. The Herd and Flames will compete in a dual meet at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium in Huntington Jan. 20 at 11 a.m.
