HOUSTON, Tx.-Marshall's Danica Ross tied a school record she equaled only hours earlier, taking sixth in the finals of the 50 Freestyle to lead the Herd in the evening session on the second day of competition of the 2013 Swimming/Diving Championships at the University of Houston Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
"We had another great session," said Marshall head coach Bill Tramel. "We moved up or held our position in all of our opportunities."
The Herd currently sits in sixth place with 114 points.
Ross once again swam the event in a time of 23.37 seconds and finished just .13 seconds out of fourth place.
Also competing in Thursday's finals was 3-meter diver Lauren Rone, who took sixth with a score of 236.70.
Kacey Preun and Kaley Gregory swam the finals of the 500 Free and finished 10th (4:53.68) and 16th (4:59.01), respectively. Preun's time was nearly 4 1/2 seconds faster than her prelim mark of 4:58.12.
In the 200 Free Relay, the Herd's quartet of Lauren Hurd, Ross, Tiffany Aeling and Katie Kramer finished sixth in a time of 1:37.11. That mark was 1.5 seconds faster than the Herd's performance last season and the best time since 2005.
"I told our women tonight that we need to keep our foot on the gas pedal," Tramel said. "We can't be satisfied with what we have accomplished thus far. We have two more days of competition, two more days of opportunities. We need to just keep doing what we are doing."
The Friday morning session begins at 10 a.m. CT and will feature preliminary action in the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back and 1-meter diving competition. The evening session will begin at 6 p.m. CT and will comprise the finals of all these events, in addition to the 400 Medley Relay.
