HOUSTON, Tx.-Marshall's Lauren Rone and Kacey Preun finished fifth and eighth, respectively, in their events to lead the Herd Friday evening at the 2013 Swimming/Diving Championships at the University of Houston Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
Rone's score of 247.75 in the 1-meter diving event earned 14 team points for Marshall, who currently stands in sixth place in the team competition with 175 points.
"We had solid performances tonight but Lauren Rone was the star," said Marshall head coach Bill Tramel. "She had our highest finish thus far. It's so nice to see that from a senior."
Preun's time of 4:27.11 in the 400 IM netted the Herd 11 points.
A trio of swimmers also competed in the 100 Breast, as Madison Lawhorn took 10th (1:04.83), Kelsey Ferguson was 15th (1:07.18) and Sarah Schimenti placed 16th (1:07.28).
The Herd's final event of the evening was the 400 Medley Relay, where the quartet of Ferguson, Lawhorn, Arlie Rykosky and Danica Ross finished sixth in a time of 3:57.22.
"We have an important session tomorrow," Tramel said. "Potentially, it is our strongest session. We have many of our swimmers scheduled to swim their best event tomorrow. If we can get it done in the morning, we will have a very fun evening."
The final day of competition begins Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CT with preliminary action in the 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, 1650 Free and Platform Diving. The finals of those events, along with the 400 Free Relay, will be held in the evening session, which is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT.
