Atlanta, Ga. – The Marshall swimming and diving team kicked off the Conference USA Championships by competing in a pair of relay races Wednesday evening. The Thundering Herd set season-best times in both events.
"It's good to finally get started. We were a little off with our race execution tonight but were still able to get season-best times," coach Bill Tramel said.
In the 200-yard medley relay, seniors Vera Niemeyer (Wuerselen, Germany), Madison Lawhorn (Baltimore, Ohio) and Sarah Kay (Cape Town, South Africa), along with freshman Chloe Parsemain (Fos sur Mer, France) recorded a season-best time of 1:46.97.
Junior Kacey Preun (St. Andrews, Manitoba, Canada), freshman Bree Mury (Round Rock, Texas), junior Kaley Gregory (Hurricane, W.Va.) and senior Tiffany Aeling (Columbus, Ohio) shattered the previous season-best time by nearly seven seconds with a 7:33.81 finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
"I just feel we missed out on better performances because of lost details. The good thing is we can learn from this and have six more sessions to improve," Tramel said.
Both finishes earned the Herd 28 points for a total of 56 on the evening. Marshall sits in ninth place at the conclusion of Day 1.
The Herd will be back in action Thursday at 10 a.m. for preliminary swims in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and 50-yard freestyle. Marshall with also see its first diving action with the 3-meter diving preliminaries.
