WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Marshall swimming and diving team triumphed in a back and forth meet Friday afternoon at George Washington University, defeating the Colonials 156-144. The decision came down to the final two events of the day.

Sophomore Catherine Bendziewicz won three events for the second straight meet. She took first in the 200 Freestyle (1:52.02), 200 Breaststroke (2:22.02) and the 200 Individual Medley (2:05.42).

Junior Shir Wasserman won two events for the Herd. She touched the wall first in the 200 Butterfly (2:06.31) and the 100 Butterfly (57.98).

Sophomore Maddie Young (1 meter diving), junior Anna Lynch (1000 Freestyle) and senior Lauren Cowher (50 Freestyle) were also individual event winners on the day.

The Colonials opened the meet with a win in the 200 Medley Relay. Marshall then bounced back and won the next two events in the 1000 Freestyle (Lynch) and the 200 Freestyle (Bendziewicz). The teams then traded wins throughout the day, with neither school winning more than two consecutive events. Each team won eight events.

"This was one of those meets that define what college swimming is all about,” head coach Bill Tramel said. "It was so loud throughout and you couldn't hear anything during the last relay event. Two weeks ago at West Virginia Games, our front line was great but our depth was not. Today, we were all very good, but this time, our depth won us the meet. Every point counted. People like our birthday bison, Cara Martin, who came from behind in the 500 Free to score the 4th place points by 0.03. Brittany Wilkerson scoring important 5th place points in the 100 Fly. This was a team effort. And a special day too, with Maddie Young winning her first diving event of her career."

"The other thing that stood out today was perhaps the best fight I've seen from a Marshall team. The sense of urgency we had at the end of our races made the difference so many times this afternoon. We are just super happy with this effort."
