Jan. 25, 2013
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall's swimming and diving team will compete in its second meet in five days as it hits the road to take on Liberty Saturday at 11 a.m. in the LaHaye Aquatic Center.
The Thundering Herd was defeated on Tuesday at home by Ohio, 167-116, but had plenty of strong performances, including two freshmen who led the way against the Bobcat attack.
Danica Ross continued a hot start to her Marshall career. Appearing the water for just the third meet of her career, Ross won the 50-yard freestyle, giving her a perfect 3-for-3 record so far this season. The Binghamton, N.Y. native also swam a career-best time of 52.87 in the 100 free to pick her second win of the Ohio meet. The freshman already has five victories two her name.
Fellow freshman Kelsey Ferguson grabbed her first career victory while at Marshall. The West Virginia native had a career-best time of 2:25.55 in the 200 breaststroke to pick up the victory.
This will be just the second all-time meeting between the Herd (5-5) and the Flames (8-2). Liberty grabbed a 147-141 closely-contested victory last season. Last season's meet was featured in the publication "Profiles in Excellence: 2011-12 College Swimming & Diving Honors" as one of their six most exciting female meets of the year.
Liberty most recently won its only home meet of the year by defeating Duquesne 164-98 January 11. The Flames dual-meet victories include Campbell, Boston College and Maine.
There will not be any diving events in Saturday's meet.
