HOUSTON, Tx.-Five Marshall student-athletes advanced to the finals of three individual events after the Friday morning preliminary session at the 2013 Swimming/Diving Championships at the University of Houston Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
“We had a solid morning,” said Marshall head coach Bill Tramel. “Nine of our 15 swims were lifetime bests. Loading up the consolation heat of the 100 Breast was nice as well."
The Herd got an eighth-place finish from Kacey Preun in the 400 IM (4:26.60), while a trio of Herd swimmers made the finals in the 100 Breast. Madison Lawhorn took 10th (1:04.80) and Kelsey Ferguson was 13th (1:06.81), while Sarah Schimenti placed 15th in 1:07.15. Alexandria Black placed 17th in 1:07.44 before falling in a swim-off with Tulane’s Jillian Daleiden for the event’s last spot in the finals.
Lauren Rone, who made the finals of the 3-meter competition yesterday, also made the finals of Friday’s evening’s 1-meter event.
Four Herd swimmers also raced in the prelims of the 100 Fly Friday morning. Sarah Kay led the way with a 20th-place finish (56.93), followed by Arlie Rykosky (21st, 57.36), Katie Kramer (26th, 59.62) and Victoria Mesner (27th, 1:00.65).
In the 200 Free, Danica Ross was Marshall’s top swimmer with a 17th-place finish (1:52.74), followed by Sarah Coghlin (21st, 1:54.16), Kaley Gregory (24th, 1:55.34), Lauren Hurd (25th, 1:56.20), Tiffany Aeling (26th, 1:56.25) and Megan Clemens (27th, 1:56.44).
"The goal again tonight is to improve our seed or hold,” Tramel said. “Finals is where the real excitement is. Hopefully we can harness that and have some great performances tonight."
The Herd will also compete in the 400 Medley Relay in the evening session.
