HOUSTON, Tx.-Marshall freshman Danica Ross swam the 100 Free preliminary race in 51.29 to set a new school record Saturday morning at the 2013 Swimming/Diving Championships at the University of Houston Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
Ross' time bested Milla Kuurto's mark of 51.41 in 2004. Ross led a Marshall contingent in the race, which included Lauren Hurd (25th, 53.30) and Katie Kramer (26th, 55.26). With her performance, Ross earned a spot in tonight's consolation final.
"The story of the morning was Danica Ross breaking the school record in the 100 Free," said Marshall head coach Bill Tramel. "Megan Clemens was fantastic and Alex Black dropped four seconds from her lifetime best in the 200 Breast."
Clemens posted a 17:09.21 time in the 1650 Free, which was the fourth-fastest time of the morning. Tiffany Aeling was 10th in 17:39.33.
Sarah Kay had a strong performance in the 200 Fly with a seventh-place finish in a time of 2:02.39 to gain a spot in the championship final. Arlie Rykosky was 17th (2:07.98), Sarah Coghlin was 19th (2:09.15) and Victoria Messner placed 20th (2:09.32).
Sarah Schimenti led the Herd in the 200 Breast, advancing to tonight's consolation final with a 16th-place finish in a time of 2:25.91. Kelsey Ferguson was 17th (2:26.34), followed by Madison Lawhorn (18th, 2:26.58) and Alexandria Black (21st, 2:31.47).
The Herd will also compete in the 400 Free Relay tonight, the final event of the entire championship.
"Coming back tonight, we have Sarah Kay, Sarah Schimenti, along with Kacey Preun and Kaley Gregory who have yet to swim in the mile," Tramel said. "Our 400 Free Relay will be good as well and hopefully Lauren Rone will qualify in prelims for the 10 Meter Platform Diving."
