Emma Williams of Apex High School in North Carolina has signed a National Letter of Intent with Marshall’s swimming and diving team, coach Bill Tramel announced Monday.

Williams swims for Chad Onken at the YMCA of the Triangle in Raleigh, N.C. She is primarily a backstroke and freestyle swimmer.

“We are very happy to add Emma to this amazing class,” Tramel said. “Chad approached me about Emma at Juniors in Los Angeles. He really thought Marshall would be a great fit for her. Emma attended one of our very successful senior days a few weeks later, and we could tell she loved Marshall.”

Williams’ career best times include 2:06.61 in the 200 backstroke, 1:55.02 in the 200 freestyle and a 5:10.23 in the 500 freestyle. She has also recorded times of 10:25.73 in the 1000 freestyle, 58.75 in the 100 fly and 2:10.64 in the 200 fly.

“We will have many options with Emma,” Tramel added. “She will be able to move around, because she has that versatility that so many YOTA swimmers have. I’m curious to see what events she oscillates towards once she arrives in the fall.”

Williams shared her sentiment, “Marshall University is the right fit for me in all aspects. I feel the Thundering Herd will help me reach my goals to continue to be successful both academically and in the pool. With their coaching staff and teammates, I feel like I found my second home.  We Are... Marshall.”

Williams is the seventh member of the Marshall swimming and diving recruiting class of 2014.
