HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Lauren Cowher, the 2013 Virginia High School State AA Champion in the 50 freestyle, has signed a National Letter of Intent with Marshall, coach Bill Tramel announced Tuesday.

Cowher is a senior at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Va. She swims for Greg Lake at Carter Center Aquatics, also in Roanoke. Her best times include a 24.06 in the 50 freestyle, 53.55 in the 100 freestyle and 1:08.53 in the 100 breaststoke.

“We are thrilled to have another CCA Marlin at Marshall," Tramel said. "Greg Lake does a great job preparing his swimmers for college, and Lauren will be a great example of that. Lauren is a state champion and knows how to race. She will no doubt strengthen our relays and be a major part of our team moving forward.”

In addition to her state championship as a junior, Cowher was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay that broke the Virginia High School State Record.

“I chose Marshall after my official visit went great,” Cowher said of her decision. “The campus, school and dorms were beautiful, and not too far from my hometown. The school offers the exact major I was looking for.  Probably most important was that the team and the coaches were awesome.”

Cowher is the ninth member of the Marshall swimming and diving recruiting class of 2014.
