Former Marshall tennis phenom Kellie Schmitt was hired by the Thundering Herd as an assistant coach prior to the start of the 2012-13 season.

The three-time Marshall captain and Conference USA Player of the Year was selected First-Team All-C-USA in each of her four seasons as a player and holds five Herd records, including 127 career victories that rank her first in Marshall tennis history.

"Her ability from having played at such a high level will make her a great assistant for years to come," said head coach John Mercer. "It's awesome to have her back with us."

Schmitt returns to Huntington after spending three years as the assistant coach at Joey Blake's Topnotch Tennis Academy in Scottsdale, Ariz., where she helped coach and develop student-athletes who were nationally ranked in the top-10 and top-50 of their age divisions. In her spare time, she also traveled across the country to hold high performance tennis camps for the U.S. Tennis Association.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Schmitt also worked in other tennis interests, including time as a professional at the Pittsburgh Field Club, Oxford Athletic Club, and Club for Life. She also interned with ProTenn International upon graduating from Marshall in 2009.
