BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. -- Sophomore Ellie Ball, junior Karlyn Timko, and freshman Dana Oppinger were all victorious in singles action Friday afternoon as Marshall tennis defeated Eastern Michigan 4-3 at the Huntington Tennis Club.
The Thundering Herd defeated Eastern Michigan in its regular season opener for the third consecutive season and improved to 1-0. EMU dropped to 1-2.
"It was good to get the first match out of the way," said head coach John Mercer after the victory. "I saw some good things and obviously some things that we need to work on to try and get back to the level we were playing in the fall."
Marshall began the morning with doubles victories from #2 pair Ball and Kucin (8-6 over EMU's Daphne Friedrichs and Mariya Toncheva) and #3 tandem Timko and Oppinger (8-5 over Ankita Bhatia and Zsofia Biro). The Herd fell in the #1 doubles slot but entered singles with the point advantage.
Oppinger, working in her freshman season with the Herd, doubled Marshall's lead after turning in a definitive 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Bhatia in the #5 singles spot.
Minutes later, Dominika Zaprazna was defeated at #1 singles 6-3, 7-5, but Ball answered for the Herd with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Friedrichs.
Timko gave Marshall the fourth and clinching point only seconds later, overcoming a late first set deficit before breezing through the second set (7-5, 6-0).
In the second singles spot, Maria Voscekova was defeated 6-4, 6-4, and senior Kara Kucin fell narrowly in the six spot 6-4, 4-6, 10-12.
Marshall will have a quick turnaround as it travels to Morehead, Ky. later this evening for a match at Morehead State beginning at 5 p.m.
