MOREHEAD, Ky. -- In a story similar to the Thundering Herd tennis team’s Friday morning match against Eastern Michigan, Marshall took its second win of the season by defeating Morehead State 5-2 Friday evening at the Eagle Center.
Marshall remained undefeated at 2-0 and kept its unblemished 10-0 all-time record against the Eagles (0-1) intact.
Points for MU again came from the bottom of the singles lineup as #3 Karlyn Timko, #4 Kai Broomfield, #5 Dana Oppinger, and #6 Kara Kucin each won in straight sets.
Marshall took the early point through doubles competition when Ellie Ball and Kucin defeated Morehead State’s Lissa Pacheco-Brousseau and Dominique McLean 8-4 while Timko and Oppinger beat Sandrine Beaule and Morgan Wright 8-0.
In singles, Timko improved to 2-0 this season with a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory over McLean. Kucin, who also won handily (6-0, 6-0), avenged a close loss from earlier in the day by sweeping Wright in the six singles spot.
At one singles, MSU’s Briar Preston used a victory in the first set tiebreak to overcome Marshall senior Dominika Zaprazna 7-6(4), 6-3.
The Herd will step away from regular season competition until Saturday, Jan. 26 when it travels to Morgantown, W.Va. for a meeting with West Virginia at 1 p.m.
