GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Seniors Stephanie Smith and Marija Bogicevic each won singles matches to erase a 3-1 deficit, but Marshall fell in a tight match against the ULM Warhawks, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex.
"We got off to a good start in doubles and played a lot better than we were expecting to," head coach John Mercer said. "This was the first time we've been outside this year (practice or match)."
The Herd got off to a quick start, taking the doubles point against the Warhawks with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. Maddie Silver and Brooke Lashway paired to defeat Madalina Grigoriu and Teodora Radu, 6-2. Freshmen Anna Smith and Ana Marhuenda defeated Karolina Silwanowicz and Florencia Salerno, 6-1. Stephanie Smith and Bogicevic were trailing in their match, 4-3, but it went unfinished.
ULM won the first three singles matches to take a commanding 3-1 lead. After Marhuenda (6-0, 6-0), Silver (6-1, 6-2) and Anna Smith (6-2, 6-3) each lost in straight sets, the Herd went on a comeback run, using three-set victories to even the match. Stephanie Smith dispatched of Radu, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, and Bogicevic defeated Silwanowicz, 5-7, 6-4, 6-0.
Brooke Lashway rallied from a set down to force a third set, but fell in the deciding match, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.
"We had a bit of a rocky start in singles play, but I was proud of the way that we continued to compete. We got into a position to win and it came down to a couple of points that just didn't go our way," Mercer said.
The Herd is back in action Sunday morning with a consolation match against Cal State Fullerton. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m. but could be pushed back if the earlier championship match between Florida and ULM runs late.
