Herd Falls to No. 52 Virginia Tech

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Marshall returned to the tennis court Sunday to take on No. 52 Virginia Tech. The Herd suffered its first loss of the season, falling 5-2. 

Dana Oppinger (Weingarten, Germany) and Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) faced the ITA Atlantic region’s No. 4 duo of Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita. Oppinger and Turhan fell 6-3.

The doubles point was decided in favor of VT after Karli Timko (Houston, Pa.) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) were defeated 6-2. 

Oppinger faced Fusinato again in singles action. Fusinato, a freshman from Feltre Bullano, Italy, entered Sunday’s match with a No. 7 ranking in the ITA Atlantic region. Oppinger entered with a No. 18 ranking. Oppinger was defeated 6-2, 6-3. 

Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada), Turhan, and Timko also faced ranked opponents at No. 12, 16, and 20, respectively. Broomfield was defeated by Illinica Stoica 6-4, 6-1 and Timko lost to Mita 6-2, 6-0. 

First-semester freshmen Turhan and Pomyatinskaya rallied from first set losses to provide successful outcomes. Turhan defeated Kelly Williford 1-6, 6-4 (10-4), while Pomyatinskaya defeated Isel Martinez-Marcos 6-7, 7-6 (10-2).

Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) was victorious in her first set, defeating the Hokies’ Sansitha Nandekumar 6-1, but fell behind in the second set and losing in the tiebreaker 6-7 (7-5).

The Herd now boasts a 3-1 record and will head to Lexington, Ky. to face No. 40 Kentucky on Feb. 8.
