Thundering Herd Tennis Fights for 4-3 win at Penn State

Feb. 17, 2006

State College, Pa. - With a reversal of last year's score, the Thundering Herd tennis team took a 4-3 win over the Penn State Nitany Lions Friday night after a five-hour and twenty-two minute marathon in State College, Pa.

Shannon Brown defeated Jenny Shular, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in the deciding match of the night at No. 5 singles. Ironically, Shular clinched the 4-3 win for the Nitany Lions last year over the Herd in Huntington.

Marshall improves to 7-1 on the season with the win as the Nitany Lions fall to 1-3. The No. 64 ranked Thundering Herd is set to take on St. John's tomorrow at noon at Penn State. St. John's is 2-1 on the year.

The Herd got off to a good start by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Lynzee Kever and Kellie Schmitt took an 8-3 decision over Sasha Abraham and Lauren Holzberg in No. 1 doubles and Karolina Soor and Brown defeated Shular and Katelyn BeVard 8-5 on court two. To close out the doubles sweep, Jessica Keener and Jeanne Schwartz were 8-2 winners over Andreea Niculescu and Dorothy Dohanics at No. 3.

In singles play, things got interesting as the match heated up. For the Nitany Lions, Abraham was victorious at No. 1 over Kever 6-0, 6-2, BeVard defeated Soor 0-6, 7-6, 7-6 at No. 3 and Holzberg downed Schwartz 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 on court four to give Penn State its three points in the match.

However, Marshall would get wins from Schmitt, Keener and Brown to seal the deal. At No. 2, Schmitt cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Niculescu and Keener picked up a 6-0, 7-6 win at No. 6 over Leyla Morzan to knot things at 3-3. Brown would then fight back after dropping the second set 5-7 to knock off Shular 7-5 in the third to give the Herd its seventh win on the year.

"It was an exciting match," Marshall assistant coach Laurie Mercer said. "We're glad we were able to come through and gut it out at the end, but with that, we realize there are a lot of things to keep working on and learn from to get better as the year goes on."

The Herd won't have much of a break as it will hit the courts again in a little over 13 hours to take on the St. John's Red Storm at noon in State College.
